Sonics Family Regatta

26/11/2012

A big congratulations to all those involved in the Sonics Family fun Day Regatta held last Sunday.

The event which was the first of it's kind continues the Sonic's aim of increasing the participation

of youth and their families in the sport of Dragon Boating, a worthy endeavour which from the turnout

is well supported. There were 12 teams competing on the day with Broadwater entering two teams

'Broadwater Orange' and 'Broadwater Blue'.

It was wonderful to see 14 of our juniors and their parents give it all on the day whether they were

experienced or fresh to the sport. After three rounds Broadwater Orange just missed out on competing

in the Minor Final. We hope however that the thrill and excitement of the racing on the day will encourage

those new paddlers within the team to view Dragon Boating as a great social and sporting pastime that

can involve all the family.

The fortunes of  Broadwater Blue saw the team make the Grand Final competing against a strong field of four.

The race climaxed with our team crossing the line a valiant second to the Whanau Crew who justly deserved

their win. In the Australia vs New Zealand vs the Mixed race, we saw mate against mate with our club members

split between the Kiwi and Aussie boats. Australia came in a strong first as it should be – was their any doubt.

Big big thank you's go to the Broadwater family who time and time again help out and contribute.

The list is long but sincere thank you's go to - firstly the day was all about the juniors so thank you to those

that either drummed or paddled on  the day. Their families who either paddled or supported, our sweeps

Irene, Chris and Stan, our manager's on the day Jayne, Rose and Krystal, Graham for transporting the

club's boats and Micah for his organisation and assistance with the equipment, Chris and Kalinda for

towing our club trailer. Lastly but not least to the supporters who came not to paddle but to cheer

on our teams – your commitment to the club is always inspirational.

KIDS IN NEED REGETTA 18TH NOVEMBER 2012

Hi everyone!

Thank you for another great team effort from the Paddlers of Broadwater Dragons.

For those who could not make it, the day started out very early with us being there at 6:00 (yes that’s right). The weather wasn’t sure what it was going to do so the tents went up the flaps went down and we pegged up tight……..after the first big wind.

There was huge support for this 30th Anniversary event from sports and community groups, approx 40 tents were counted and we were the fortunate ones to have the coffee tent next to us.

Teams wore T Shirts advertising their corporate businesses, sports uniforms or fancy dress, yes there was another pirate team but I can honestly say even with the eye patch on we were  better looking!

The women raced first where our fitness guru (Peter Elekana) warmed us up and handed us over to our trainee coach Chris (who PT would be very happy with) when in pirate-speak threatened us with 3 minute planks (instead of walking the plank) if we didn’t give it our best shot, luckily we won the heat. (Fortunately for us Stan only had to cut off one boat for us to win the heat!)

Our men with not as an entertaining prelude to their race followed our footsteps and won their heat.

Then the skies opened up and racing was delayed………..cutting to the chase I am happy to say that the women WON their final, although we did have a heart stopping moment or two but they were just tricking us.

The men did it a little tougher than the women on the day, when they were advised by the race committee that they could not run their final in a men’s boat but had to put in a mixed team for the final where unfortunately they did not place for a trophy. HOWEVER……… with great pride they accepted a trophy for the fastest race time on the day.

A huge well done to our first time racers ……….. how great is it to get in a boat and put into practice what we train for. Although this was a social regatta it does give you an idea of what is expected as we start going to sports regattas in preparation for the States and Nationals.

Honourable mention has to go to our sweeps Stan and Kelly who did a great job today, and as with all our sweeps kept us safe and in the boat! Thanks guys!

Thank you to everyone who always puts in to make these events a smooth fun time for us all!

Special thanks also go to Con and Diana who opened their home to the Broadwater family and put on a table laden of fat free, sugar free, delicacies (Yes it’s true PT) which quite a few of us generously partook. Micah our president disappeared for a little while and I think he was trying to figure out how to use this fantastic home for our club house (stay tuned)?

Don’t forget to put your name down for the regattas coming up and if you are not sure what to expect talk to the paddlers who were in the boat today ……………… you will know them they are the ones smiling!

Regards

Roze

PAN PAC - DAY 2 UPDATE

Good morning paddlers,
Yesterday was a great day at the Masters Pan Pacs with the exciting 200m sprints.

Although we just missed out on getting a medal, Broadwater was successful in getting into all final and it was a real learning curve of racing pressure and mental alertness required at the Pan Pac level. .Amazingly in our Masters Mixed final there was only 0.3 of a second gap between the leading 4 boats.

True to the spirit of Broadwater we pushed ourselves to the limit while trying to give all paddlers including our newbie paddlers a taste of competitive paddling.

Congratulations to Joelle, Carmel, Leisa, Ricky and Paul T as they participated in their first big regatta.

The club would also like to thank the Cindy, Michelle, Joan and Teema, who have come and paddled with and supported our club at this PanPac

Once again much appreciation to  our hard working managers, Jayne, Kelly, Maggie,  Karen (Jones) for their team management skills and to Denise for taking photos and videos of the event.  Also a big thank you to the family and friends who came to support on the day.

Photos of  Day 2 can be found on our website at:  http://www.broadwaterdragons.com/pan-pac-2012-day-2.html

Congratulations all for a successful Pan Pac endeavour.

Pan Pac - Day 1 Update

Hi paddlers,

Just an update on the Pan Pac - Day 1

A big thank you to our manager Jayne, and assistant managers Kelly and Maggie, who made sure our teams were ready for each race and got us down to the marshalling area on time.  Also thank you to Singo and Kelly for organising the Pan Pac T-shirt which really complemented our race club gear!

It was  a busy day as paddlers were jumping in and out of boats as we participated in quite a few events and had doubled up on padders.

The Great Grand Masters did reasonably well considering it was the first time Broadwater has put a GGM team on water. Many of the GGM were backing up also in the Grand Masters boat.

The Masters had a very competitive division and was able to get into the final where we just missed out on medially as the first 4 boats passed the finish line requiring a photo finish to see who actually positioned where in the race.

The Grand Masters gracefully took the pressure off the club by getting a silver medal after having to race the finals twice when the Tweed/Mt Warning boat nearly collided with the Ice Dragons and Broadwater Dragons race.

Congratulations to all our new paddlers who for some was their first regatta as well as their first Pan Pac!!!

Please see some of the photos from today here

Well done Broadwater on the first day! Good luck all tomorrow in the 500m races.

Cheers

Micah
