2015 Mt Warning Climb Challenge

Date: Sun 11 Jan 2015

Cost: Free

Starting Time: 6 am (NSW Times)  Early start as temperatures are more pleasant in the early hours.

Meeting Point: Car park at the base of the mountain.  Mt Warning Road, Mt Warning NSW 2484 (see map)


Toilets?  Toilets are available only at the start of the walk at the base car park.


Transport:
We ask paddlers and associates to car pool.  If you are looking for a car pool or have room in your vehicle please contact us on from below.


Distance: 8.8 km track. The track has over 1000 steps to the top and dirt paths to assist your journey. It is equivalent to climbing a 30 story building.


What to bring? Good tough shoes,  a wind breaker, day pack, snacks and munchies, plenty of water, camera. insect repellant. Note: Club will be brining first aid kit.


What not to bring? Please don't take anything that can turn into rubbish and you are not willing to bring back down the mountain.


Can I climb Mt Warning?  Some will find it a bit difficult and scary to climb the last bit as it gets a bit steep, don’t  worry we will be climbing in 2 groups.
Express Group, will challenge getting to the top and back to meet Leisure Group for brunch.
Leisure group, will hike two-third of the way up, view the rain forest and views and then return in time to meet Express Group at the starting location.

Interesting Facts about Mt Warning
  • The 2,455 hectare Mount Warning National Park is in the heart of the Tweed Valley, 12 kilometres south-west of Murwillumbah. The park’s environmental significance comes from its large stands of sub-tropical rainforest and its biodiversity.
  • Captain James Cook, named this magnificent land mark Mt Warning in respect of the dangerous shoals he encountered off shore.
  • 20 million years ago Mount Warning was the central vent of a large shield volcano with an area of over 4,000 square kilometres. It originally reached nearly twice its present height.
  • The Border Ranges encompass more than 30,000 hectares of scenic rainforest, gorges, and waterfalls. The area has an extraordinary concentration of frog, snake, bird and marsupial species.
