Hi paddlers,
It has been an amazing 10 days in Hong Kong and the Broadwater Club Representatives have successfully broken our previous record in Macau (2010) -1 bronze medal, to come home with 2 Golds and set a new benchmark!
With nearly 5,000 competitors and thousands of supporters and onlookers , it is great to hear the announcer echo over all of Hong Kong harbour 'and Broadwater is in the lead' and ' Broadwater has won gold'
Our grand masters mix did an amazing job of blowing away the competition with a unchallenged lead in both the heats and the final. In fact, due to protests from other crews the finals for the GM 500m had to be run again, and to prove we were the undisputed champions we increased the lead from 3 s to 4s which gave roars and cheers from the crowds to see us come in with over 1 boat length in front of the competition.

Our masters mix did tremendously well, however had a bit of bad luck rough waters and disorganised officials. We strategised the races to have 6 strong men in the boat to race the Masters semis and finals, however while waiting on officials protests decision to see whether we were in the semis or not, they ran our race without us (while telling us that the race would not be run until a decision was given). I am 100% sure that with our strongest 6 men in the Masters boat we would have placed for a medal.
Our Women's team had some touch competition with over 21 teams challenging for medal places. Great effort to our ladies to go through the repercharges and make it back into the semis and then into the minor finals.
Not many Australia clubs came back with2 Gold Medals and we put our victory to the unselfish and continuing support of every paddler, sweep, drummer and manager, coach within our team!
A big thank you to our Sue Gomez and Di for their tremendous coordinating and support efforts here in Australia! To our team managers, Sue Graham, Helen and Bonnie, thank you for the amazing job coordinating with the local officals, - running back and forwards amongst thousands of people to keep us organised. Many thanks to Carly and Denise for taking the photos and videos and assisting the managers where possible. Our sweeps, Irene, Dougal, Cheryl and Brenda were all put to the test on such rough waters and we applaud their skills during a championship which had boats divert from their course or tip regularity on a daily basis. Awesome job sweeps! To our drummers Roze, Yan, Perine, Carly and Denise - well done for keeping us motivated and 'hanging in' there!!!!!
And on behalf of the coaches I would like to thank our 2X Gold World Champion Team (yeh yeh yeh!!!!) for making the financial, physical and mental commitment to yourself, the team and the club and having the belief in the training program and in yourselves that you are World Champions!!!!
Congratulations to all
